Passion for Good

Curatorial statement by Jason Shih

Through poetic imagination, people can unexpectedly discover the beauty of subtle things in daily life. Sometimes it is a beautiful association of similar experiences, sometimes it is an analogy of aesthetic consciousness. Sculpture creation is a way to lead people to experience poetry in person from the time and space conditions of light, shadow and form. Through creative inspiration, tolerance and emotional observation. The sculptor imparts beauty to distinct characters and transforms shapes into rich expressions. Between the trend of volume and the flow of rhythm, the beautiful plot like a fleeting moment is finally recorded in the work, waiting for the viewer to encounter it. Such an aesthetic encounter is not only a retrospective of the sculptor’s aesthetic experience, but also a journey of inspiration for the viewer to reflect on his own aesthetic experience.

This exhibition presents the recent creations of modern abstract sculptures by sculptor Jason Shih. Jason’s abstract sculpture creations, on the one hand, tell the origin of aesthetic experience with melodious emotions. On the other hand, they also clearly mark the profound appearance of various beautiful things in life in the real objects shaped by color, form and texture. The work explores flowing and floating emotions in the natural mountains, rivers, wind and clouds. Using perceptual creative techniques to interpret gestures and kinetic dance movements; it also attempts to show the life and expressions of the Mood for Love from a context full of tension. Each work tells its own creativity, vivid imagery, and unique emotions.

“Aura Imagery – Jason Shih’s Abstract Sculpture Exhibition”, under the free and uninhibited morphological style, the works are delicate, graceful and dramatic. The collection of works has become a colorful and bright concert feast, and the creation of a series of 23 sculptures covered by the three themes of wind, dance and flower has become a wonderful melody that connects the entire drama.

“Wind”
Theme characteristics: flowing, floating
Series of works: Cloud (#1), Emerging (#2), Wind, Flying, Vapor, Chasing, The Beginning, Dawn at Sea

Creative concept:
Wind and clouds always come and go, an impromptu existence in time and space. The light body, the changing light and shadow, may flow or float, changing in a dynamic way. The wind and clouds are like people’s emotions. They are magnificent when facing the sun while chaotic and dark when against the sun. Perhaps, there is a cloud living in everyone’s heart, which rises and falls with the wind and calms. Or maybe, the wind never stops flowing is like us always moving. Imagine the breath like wind and clouds, like the floating mountains and the ripples rolled up by the breeze. It seems to reflect our mood all the time, breathing, lingering, and whispering, truthfully to present our current state of mind.

Material or reality, if there is the intervention of kinetic energy conditions, it will produce a logical dialectical relationship in time and space, dramatic tension or transformation of image forms. Sculptures use solid shapes to present a beautiful visual experience, just like telling a vivid story – a collection of observations from different angles or times in space. The sculptures are presented through unique composition techniques, customary codes and colors. A beautiful image that seems to be happening in the poetic realm.

“Dance”
Theme characteristics: gesture, kinetic energy
Series of works: Turning (#3), Wind (#4), Rising, Wave, Beyondness, Bird, Fish within Water

Creative concept:
If architecture is condensed music, then sculpture is the dancer in space. With the dynamic viewpoint of the viewer, the sculpture’s rich postures naturally transform with time, light and shadow. And in this huge environmental setting, the wind through the lake, the fish swimming in the water, the herons standing by the shore, or the rogue waves. Using color, shape and texture to interweave the gravity, light and shadow like dancing. In the dynamic beauty of the abstract works, the audience will appreciate the simple beauty of lightness and streamlines that are gently evoked by the dancer’s posture, as well as the light and shadow creation with tension.

What sculpture and ballet have in common is the response to gravity. For metal sculptures, the influence of gravity is especially related to the layout of the structural points. The beauty of form itself is often the result of the structure’s perfect response to and interpretation of gravity. The more dangerous the ballet movements are, the more they reflect the human body’s tenacious will to escape gravity. Just like the unruly/out-of-the-air/absurd free form, it can touch the throbbing that is fresh in people’s hearts.

“Flower”
Theme features: life, expression
Series of works: Circle (#5), Dawn (#6), Orchid, Early Spring (First Heart), Flaming, Sprout, Peaking, Memory of the Sea

Creative concept:
Plants are the perfect connection for people to share the wonderful experiences of life. The new sprouts facing the dawn fill people with infinite imagination; the majestic bamboo in midsummer bloom with the vitality of striving upward; the fruitful harvest is the expectation of people’s hard work. The image of flowers is often a typical way for people to express their state of mind. In addition to being cited in form and symbolic symbols, the spiritual meaning presented by flowers is also often used as a metaphor in the humanistic spirit or cultural connotation. Using flowers as a fuse in creation to carry out the artist’s journey of imagery in the poetic realm can often open up many possibilities for elegant imagination.

The various forms of life are just like the season in spring when hundreds flowers bloom. Each life has its own texture, sometimes beautiful and glorious, sometimes restrained and silent. Just like the sculpture in front of the viewer, with the shine of light and the reflection of the time and space, when people face the desire for harmony and gentleness in life, life will eventually be transformed into a long poem, allowing people to wander in their own magnificent mood.

People say that creators are like gardeners, twisting flowers and weeds, cultivating their own dream gardens. Jason Shih is more like an animal trainer in a circus troupe. Adjusting the reality of various charming attributes between aesthetic exploration and object iconography. Although animals and plants are beautiful species, the elegance and harmony and the violence and perversity are indeed a story of two worlds. However, in terms of poetic imagery and dramatic tension, such vivid dynamics and volume of light and shadow – Shi Chengze’s circus may be able to faithfully present the appearance of the sculptor’s inner little theater.
