Context and Original

Haruki Murakami once proposed three characteristics for “originality”:

1. Identification – Unique style
2. Evolution – Continuous improvement
3. System – Rich context

The general creative process is always to clarify the essence of things, explore the logic of ideas, and exhaust the accuracy of language through repeated attempts and revisions, so as to gradually approach the core of the subject. And when the quality of creation reaches a certain level, you turn around and look back at the origin of the long and thin strands, you can generally see the faint threads. In the continuous art practice, as the thinking gradually becomes clearer, the creative context will also be clarified.

A “family tree” of the work was included in my thesis of graduate study. That was a sorting and classification of 41 works that I had made for the two-year MFA degree according to characteristics and themes. The interesting thing to see is what the original content of life is that I pay attention to, and the context that gradually unravels in the process.

Some creative threads will indeed last for more than ten or twenty years, just like the organic state of life itself. People are always bumping and rolling, trying to say what they want to say; trying to do what they want to do. In the process, you may not be able to accurately separate yourself, but of course there is no need to rush to define everything right away. As time goes by and the form and meaning mature, perhaps walking on such a forest path, the accumulation and confidence of artistic practice along the way can always let us know that the morning light is not far away.
