The Subject of Sculpture in Contemporary Art

Looking back at my school days, I attended the School of Fine Arts and the School of Arts and Crafts. The former laid the foundation for humanistic insights and original methods; the latter cultivated proficiency in artistic concepts and practical methods. After entering the industry and practicing my artistic creation, I found that many details in the actual interpretation and communication were actually closer to the majors in the design school.

Sculpture covers a wide range of areas in contemporary times, ranging from jewelry design to large architectural landscapes, etc., with shapes of various sizes and scales. If there are no material and technical limitations, the aesthetics and interest of form are actually the same thing conceptually. And perhaps, this is the era’s help that contemporary “smart manufacturing” can amplify and empower sculpture creators. In fact, sculpture as a professional form of contemporary art, while adapting to changes in industrial operations, has gradually evolved from the visible aesthetic value of form and color to be compatible with humanistic and social publicity; the spatial integration of landscape and architecture, and Interdisciplinary operational thinking such as the streaming of manufacturing and business operations seems to involve the diverse integration of soft and hard ecologies.

Thinking back to 2015, when I graduated from the China Academy of Art, the sculpture department was still in the School of Plastic Arts. After 2017, Studio No. 5 under the Sculpture Department became independent and became the Fiber Art Department (Hangzhou held the Fiber Art Triennial Exhibition), and jointly established it with the Sculpture Department and the Public Space Art Department as the “School of Sculpture and Public Art” (The original School of Plastic Arts has been spun off). Subsequently, Guangzhou and Hubei colleges also established the same college system.

Contemporary art often responds to changes in the industrial environment. In particular, the changes in the establishment of the college’s education side can provide a glimpse of the evolution of the contemporary industrial status. Perhaps, the subject of smart manufacturing, like photography a hundred years ago, will also bring people to reflect on and re-understand the established contemporary cognition.
