Beautiful things can awaken people’s impression of happiness, just as good times are always unforgettable. Writer Hui-yin Lin once said: “Who doesn’t have two or three graceful flowers covered with emotions on the stem of memory.” The happy, glorious and touching moments experienced in people’s lives are just like the buds of time treasured in people’s hearts. They always bloom on the branches of fragmented memories in daily life when not noticing, and become the beautiful times that are awakened.

The sea breeze, mountain mist, morning light, and sunset glow, in addition to shape and color, also have the memory of temperature; cooking smoke, hot soup, wooden tables, ceramic cups, the rustic atmosphere is a familiar touch. In people’s daily aesthetic experience, the memory of temperature and smell associated with touch often becomes a trigger for a journey to relive the past. The work involved in modern abstract sculpture creation is to “capture” the various beautiful presences in this dazzling and beautiful space and time with true emotions and vivid shapes and colors.

During a trip to Hualien and Taitung in the summer of 2022, I created a group of abstract sculptures that narrate the curves of the coast and the green mountains and waters (Trilogy – Sunshine, Valley and Coastline) while leisurely wandering among the lush mountains and blue oceans. Then, through poetic transformation and abstract techniques, I developed a series of abstract works that interpret natural scenery, the movements of fish and birds, and the shapes and colors of liberal style. The ancients said, “Learn from nature outside and find the source of the heart inside.” I thought that when Huang, Gong-wang painted “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains”, he must have been enjoying traveling around the rivers and feeling the taste of life. When an artist’s body and mind are in a state of time and space migration or spiritual wandering, he can often generate empathy and creative poetic imagination for the people, events and scenes around him through the clever transformation of the poetic scene. As for the creation of modern abstract sculpture, through such transformation, the sculptor can drive aesthetic consciousness and use skillful creative techniques to refine the accuracy of materials, shapes and rhythms, thereby creating a beautiful poetic work.

Serendipity – it is the artist’s process from sketching real scenes, expressing poetic feelings, to expressing his feelings freely. It seems that in those wonderful journeys of the mind, the impressions that were particularly deep for the artist have become pure brightness and cheerfulness as time goes by. Serendipity – it is also an opportunity for viewers to connect with the aesthetic experience created by the artist from their own life experience through the appreciation of the artwork. Through the works, viewers can also relive the good times in their experiences through their own imagination and memory.
