Jason Shih • An Argument with Gravity
“As a professional sculptor, I like to experience the taste of life through perceptual observation in subtle moments, and I am drawn to the ever-changing possibilities of forms within poetic, imaginary space. For me, artistic creation is a way of sharing the moods and stories found in daily life.”
Jason Shih’s sculpture begins with a contradiction. A material associated with weight, resistance and permanence is made to behave as though it were liquid. In these sweeping forms, mass stretches, folds and opens into space, producing silhouettes that seem caught somewhere between an object and a gesture.
Shih’s long engagement with metal is evident in the confidence of these transitions. There is considerable technical control behind surfaces that appear effortless, particularly where narrow supports expand into broad cantilevered forms or openings are carved through the body of the sculptures. Yet the engineering never becomes the point. What matters is the sensation of movement it makes possible.
The polished blue surface adds another ambiguity. It can suggest water, sky, industrial design or even something biological without settling into any one association. This openness fits Shih’s interest in the small observations and moods of everyday life. Rather than fixing those experiences into narratives, he gives them physical form: buoyant, aerodynamic and unexpectedly alive.
